USMC 5th Marines Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Most Decorated Regiment in the Marine Corps
No regiment in the United States Marine Corps has earned more combat decorations than the 5th Marines. From the wheat fields of Belleau Wood to the streets of Fallujah, this regiment has been at the center of every major American conflict for over a century, writing a record of valor that stands unmatched.
The 5th Marine Regiment was activated on June 8, 1917, and deployed to France as part of the 4th Marine Brigade during World War I, fighting at Belleau Wood, Soissons, Saint-Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne — battles that earned the Marines their reputation as "Devil Dogs." In World War II, the 5th Marines fought at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa with the 1st Marine Division. In Korea, the regiment played a central role in the Inchon landing and the Chosin Reservoir breakout. The regiment served multiple tours in Vietnam, and in 2003 spearheaded the 1st Marine Division's advance to Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Based at Camp Pendleton as part of the 1st Marine Division, the 5th Marines remain the standard by which all other Marine regiments are measured.
