USMC 5th Marines 3rd Battalion WWI Patch — USMC Embroidered Patch
3rd Battalion, 5th Marines — The Indianhead Division
"Woods now U.S. Marine Corps entirely." Those seven words, reported by Major Maurice Shearer on June 26, 1918, ended one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. This patch carries the Indianhead insignia as worn by 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines — the unit that delivered the final blow at Belleau Wood.
3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, under Major Benjamin Berry and later Major Maurice Shearer, was at the heart of the savage fighting in Belleau Wood. The battalion's Marines advanced into the southern portion of the wood on June 6, 1918, engaging German defenders in close-quarters combat among the trees, rocks, and ravines. After twenty days of continuous fighting — bayonets, rifles, hand grenades, and fists — 3rd Battalion launched the final assault on June 26 that cleared the last German defenders from the wood. The French renamed it "Bois de la Brigade de Marine" in honor of the Marine tenacity that had refused to yield.
Perfect For: 3/5 Marines veterans across all eras, Belleau Wood historians, 4th Marine Brigade heritage collectors, and anyone who honors the battalion that cleared the wood.
