USMC 4th Marine Brigade WWI Patch — USMC Embroidered Patch
The Devil Dogs of Belleau Wood — 4th Marine Brigade
"Retreat? Hell, we just got here." With those words, Captain Lloyd Williams announced the arrival of the United States Marines on the Western Front — and nothing in the history of the Corps would ever be the same. This patch represents the 4th Marine Brigade, the formation that forged the modern Marine Corps in the crucible of World War I and earned the nickname that Marines carry to this day: Teufel Hunden — Devil Dogs.
The 4th Marine Brigade was organized as part of the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division, comprising the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion. On June 6, 1918, the Brigade attacked into Belleau Wood against entrenched German forces of the 237th Division, launching what many historians consider the defining battle in Marine Corps history. Over 20 days of savage fighting — bayonets, rifles, hand-to-hand combat — the Marines cleared the wood, suffering 9,777 casualties including 1,811 killed. The French renamed it "Bois de la Brigade de Marine" and awarded the Croix de Guerre. The Brigade went on to fight at Soissons, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, cementing the Marine Corps' reputation as an elite fighting force.
Perfect For: Marine Corps heritage enthusiasts, WWI historians, descendants of Belleau Wood veterans, Devil Dog pride collectors, and anyone who honors the Marines who transformed the Corps forever.
Retreat? Hell — we just got here.
