Marine Reconnaissance units — both Battalion Reconnaissance (BN Recon) and Force Reconnaissance (Force Recon) — have served as the Marine Corps' premier intelligence gathering and special operations capable forces since World War II. Recon Marines conduct amphibious reconnaissance, deep reconnaissance, surveillance, battlespace shaping, and direct action operations behind enemy lines. Earning the right to wear the Recon insignia requires surviving one of the most grueling selection and training pipelines in the military, including Basic Reconnaissance Course, combatant diver school, and military freefall parachute training.
