3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines' identity is inseparable from its 2010 deployment to Sangin District, Helmand Province — one of the costliest single-battalion deployments of the entire Afghanistan war. The battalion lost 25 Marines killed in action and over 200 wounded during seven months of intense combat against Taliban fighters who had fortified the district with IEDs and ambush positions. The battalion's sacrifice drew national attention and earned 3/3 the title "America's Battalion" for the way its Marines embodied the nation's fighting spirit. Based in Hawaii as part of the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3/3 continues to train and deploy, carrying the memory of Sangin and the standard it set.
