3rd Battalion, 1st Marines lives by a motto that leaves no room for compromise. "Death Before Dishonor" isn't just words on a patch — it's the standard that every Marine in the battalion is held to, from the newest boot to the battalion commander. This patch represents that unyielding commitment.
3/1, known as "The Thundering Third," serves as part of the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, at Camp Pendleton. The battalion has compiled a combat record that spans the Pacific campaigns of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. In Iraq, 3/1 was heavily engaged in the Battle of Fallujah during Operation Phantom Fury in November 2004 — some of the most intense urban combat since the Vietnam War. The battalion's Marines cleared the city block by block, house by house, in close-quarters fighting that tested every aspect of their training and resolve. "Death Before Dishonor" was more than a motto in Fallujah — it was a way of life.
