USMC 2nd Tank Battalion Masters of the Iron Horse Patch — USMC Embroidered Patch
Masters of the Iron Horse — 2nd Tank Battalion
From Iceland to Helmand, from Tarawa to Baghdad, 2nd Tank Battalion was the armored fist of the 2nd Marine Division for nearly eight decades. This patch carries the identity of Marines who rode iron horses into the most violent places on earth — and always came out swinging.
Formed on 20 December 1941 at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California, 2nd Tank Battalion deployed its first company to Iceland with the Provisional Brigade before the war even began in earnest. Charlie Company sailed with the 2nd Marines to the Solomon Islands and fought at Tanambogo in August 1942. The battalion participated in every action of the 2nd Marine Division through World War II — Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa — earning three Presidential Unit Citations. During the Korean War, 2nd Tanks provided personnel to augment 1st Tank Battalion and supplied the cadre for the 8th Tank Battalion. Based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the battalion saw combat in Desert Storm, led the 1st Marine Division across the Iraqi border on 20 March 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2009. 2nd Tank Battalion was deactivated on 5 May 2021 after 79 years of service under Force Design 2030.
Perfect For: Veterans of 2nd Tanks, 2nd Marine Division tankers, Camp Lejeune Marines, OIF and OEF armor veterans, and anyone who honors the legacy of Marine armor.
Masters of the Iron Horse — deactivated, never defeated.
