2nd Recon Battalion is based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as the division reconnaissance asset of the 2nd Marine Division. The battalion's Marines are trained in amphibious reconnaissance, ground reconnaissance, deep reconnaissance, and surveillance and observation — the full spectrum of tactical intelligence gathering. Recon Marines undergo one of the most physically and mentally demanding training pipelines in the military, including the Basic Reconnaissance Course, combat diving, and advanced patrolling. From the beaches of Tarawa to the mountains of Afghanistan, 2nd Recon Marines have operated ahead of the main body, providing the critical intelligence that allows commanders to make decisive battlefield decisions.
