Every Marine division depends on those who see the enemy first — the scouts, the reconnaissance Marines, the intelligence operators who push forward of the main body to find, fix, and report. This patch represents the "Eyes of the Division" within the 2nd Marine Division, the Marines who go where others can't yet follow.
The 2nd Marine Division, headquartered at Camp Lejeune, has relied on its reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities since World War II. Whether it was scouts probing Japanese defenses on Tarawa and Saipan, recon Marines infiltrating ahead of the division in Vietnam-era exercises, or intelligence operatives mapping enemy positions in Iraq's Al Anbar province, the Eyes of the Division have always been the first to make contact and the last to break it. This tradition of forward presence and aggressive intelligence gathering has been central to the 2nd MARDIV's ability to fight and win across every clime and place.
