When enemy aircraft fly low over Marine positions, they enter the kill zone of 2nd LAAD. Armed with Stinger missiles and the cold-blooded patience of a trained gunner, these Marines deliver death from below. This patch captures the lethal attitude of Marine ground-based air defense.
The 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, based at MCAS Cherry Point under Marine Air Control Group 28, provides close-in, low-altitude surface-to-air weapons fires in defense of the MAGTF. 2nd LAAD Marines operate the FIM-92 Stinger missile system and the Avenger weapons system, deploying with Marine Expeditionary Units and ground combat elements worldwide. The battalion has seen combat in Desert Storm, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, often serving in dual roles as both air defense gunners and provisional security forces. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2nd LAAD deployed with Task Force Tarawa and was attached to infantry battalions during the invasion.
