USMC 2nd Infantry Division WWI Patch — Embroidered Patch
Second to None — The Indianhead Division
The iconic Indian Head on a white star is one of the most recognized military insignia in American history — and one of the only times in U.S. military history when Marines wore an Army division patch. This patch represents the storied 2nd Infantry Division of World War I, the only AEF division composed of both Army and Marine Corps personnel, and the division that announced America's arrival as a world military power on the battlefields of France.
The 2nd Division was organized on October 26, 1917, at Bourmont, France, comprising the Army's 3rd Infantry Brigade and the Marine Corps' 4th Marine Brigade — the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments along with the 6th Machine Gun Battalion. The division fought at Belleau Wood, Soissons, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, earning three French Croix de Guerre and the coveted Fourragère. Major General John A. Lejeune, USMC, assumed command on July 28, 1918 — one of only two times a Marine general commanded an Army division. The division's "Indianhead" insignia, designed by its own troops, became legendary. Marines wore it with distinct background colors denoting their specific unit within the brigade.
Perfect For: WWI history enthusiasts, 2nd Infantry Division veterans, Marine Corps heritage collectors, descendants of 4th Marine Brigade Marines, and anyone who honors the Marines who fought and bled in France.
Second to none — the Indianhead Division.
