USMC 2nd Bn 8th Marines America's Battalion Patch — Embroidered Patch
America's Battalion — 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines
When a battalion earns the title "America's Battalion," it's not self-appointed — it's written in the blood of every theater the 8th Marines have fought in. 2/8 carries one of the most storied histories in the 2nd Marine Division, from the beaches of Tarawa to the streets of Grenada and beyond.
2nd Battalion, 8th Marines is based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, under the 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. Activated in 1940, 2/8 fought through the Pacific War's most brutal island campaigns — Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. In 1982-83, 2/8 deployed to Beirut, Lebanon, evacuating the US Ambassador and 580 civilians, then participating in the evacuation of the PLO. In October 1983, while en route back to Beirut after learning of the barracks bombing, 2/8 was diverted to lead the invasion of Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury — liberating the island and rescuing American students. The battalion immediately continued to Beirut afterward. In the post-9/11 era, 2/8 deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, earning its reputation as one of the most versatile and combat-tested battalions in the Marine Corps.
