USMC 29th Marines Melanesia Patch — Embroidered Patch
From Melanesia to Okinawa's Southern Front
The 29th Marine Regiment earned its Melanesia distinction through service in the South Pacific before joining the 6th Marine Division for the brutal campaign at Okinawa. This patch represents a regiment that fought from the tropical islands of Melanesia to the rocky ridges of Okinawa's killing fields.
The 29th Marines were activated during World War II and incorporated into the 6th Marine Division when it was formed on Guadalcanal in September 1944. At Okinawa, the 29th Marines fought through the northern part of the island before being committed to the savage fighting in the south, including the hellish assault on the Sugar Loaf-Half Moon-Horseshoe hill complex. The regiment relieved the battered 22nd Marines at Sugar Loaf and continued the assault, fighting through some of the most intense close combat of the Pacific War. The 29th Marines earned a Presidential Unit Citation for their actions at Okinawa, helping the 6th Division capture two-thirds of the island and accounting for over 23,000 enemy killed or captured.
Perfect For:
