USMC 1st MARDIV 1st Marine Regiment Guadalcanal Patch — Embroidered Patch
The First Marines at Guadalcanal — Where It All Began
Before the 1st Marines became the most decorated regiment in the Corps, they had to prove themselves in the crucible of Guadalcanal. This patch commemorates the 1st Marine Regiment's baptism of fire on August 7, 1942 — the day America went on the offensive in the Pacific and the 1st Marines went in with the first wave.
The 1st Marine Regiment landed at Guadalcanal as part of the 1st Marine Division's assault on the Solomon Islands. Under Colonel Clifton Cates, the regiment came ashore at Red Beach and pushed inland to seize the critical Japanese airfield that would become Henderson Field. For months, the regiment fought through jungle terrain against experienced Japanese troops in conditions so brutal that thousands of Marines fell to malaria alone. The 1st Marines went on to fight at Cape Gloucester, where they were first ashore on December 26, 1943, and at Peleliu — where the regiment suffered 58% casualties and 1,749 men fell in just ten days of fighting on Bloody Nose Ridge. The regiment's Guadalcanal patch marks the beginning of a combat legacy that spans nine decades.
