USMC 1st MARDIV Vietnam Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Old Breed Returns to War
The 1st Marine Division didn't just serve in Vietnam — it fought some of the most grueling campaigns of the entire war. This patch represents the Marines who carried the Old Breed's legacy into the jungles, rice paddies, and hostile villages of South Vietnam, enduring years of intense combat that tested every ounce of Marine Corps resolve.
Deploying to Vietnam in 1966, the 1st Marine Division operated primarily in the I Corps tactical zone around Da Nang and the An Hoa Basin. The division conducted dozens of named operations — Starlite, Allen Brook, Mameluke Thrust, Meade River, Oklahoma Hills, and Pipestone Canyon among them — fighting a determined enemy in some of the most unforgiving terrain on earth. The division's 7th Marine Regiment participated in Operation Starlite in August 1965, the first major American engagement against the Viet Cong. By the time the division departed Vietnam in 1971, 7,012 Marines had been killed in action. The 1st Marine Division was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and a second from President Nixon upon its return to Camp Pendleton.
