1st Light Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion — USMC Embroidered Patch
Marine Air Defense — Missiles Up
The 1st Light Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion provided the ground-based air defense that protected Marine forces from low-altitude air attack. This officially licensed patch represents the Marines who manned the missile launchers and stood ready to defend the MAGTF from the sky.
The 1st Light Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion (1st LAAM) was a Marine Corps ground-based air defense unit that provided low-altitude surface-to-air missile capability in defense of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The battalion's Marines operated shoulder-launched and vehicle-mounted surface-to-air missile systems, providing the close-in air defense umbrella that protected critical MAGTF assets, installations, and forward combat areas from enemy aircraft and missile attack. The LAAM battalions were the predecessors of today's Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD) battalions.
