1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (1st LAR) "Highlanders" is a United States Marine Corps ground combat unit that specializes in mounted reconnaissance, security, and economy-of-force operations. Based at Camp Pendleton, California, 1st LAR operates the LAV-25 Light Armored Vehicle and its variants, providing the Fleet Marine Force with rapid, mobile reconnaissance and screening capabilities that are essential to maneuver warfare.

The "Blackwatch" name and "Highlanders" identity are drawn from the famous Scottish military regiment, reflecting the battalion's aggressive scouting spirit and warrior ethos. 1st LAR Marines are among the first to make contact with the enemy, racing ahead of the main body in their eight-wheeled LAVs to find, fix, and report on enemy positions. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, 1st LAR spearheaded the Marine advance into Iraq, conducting reconnaissance missions deep into enemy territory and engaging Iraqi forces in running battles across the desert. The battalion's speed, firepower, and aggressive reconnaissance tactics proved decisive in shaping the battlespace for the follow-on Marine divisions.
