1st LAAD Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion — Embroidered Patch
Death from Below
While the jets own the sky, the Marines of 1st LAAD own everything beneath them. Armed with Stinger missiles and the cutting-edge Marine Air Defense Integrated System, these Marines are the last line of defense against low-altitude threats to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. This patch represents the warriors who look up so everyone else doesn't have to.
Originally activated as 1st Forward Area Air Defense Battery on 1 July 1982 at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, the unit employed the Redeye missile and the newly fielded Stinger missile across the Pacific Rim. After decommissioning in 2007, 1st LAAD Battalion was reactivated on 31 August 2023 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, as part of the Marine Corps' Force Design 2030 initiative to increase the air defense footprint in the Pacific. The battalion has already achieved key milestones including activation of Firing Battery Alpha in 2024 and fielding of the MADIS system in 2025, marking a pivotal step in enhancing expeditionary ground-based air defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
