1st Battalion, 6th Marines is based at Camp Lejeune as part of the 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. The 6th Marines' history begins in the trenches of France during World War I, where the regiment earned its Devil Dog reputation at Belleau Wood, Soissons, and the Meuse-Argonne. In WWII, the 6th Marines fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. 1/6 has continued the tradition through deployments to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, maintaining the 2nd Marine Division's reputation as a force in readiness on the east coast.
