1/4's motto says everything that needs to be said: Whatever It Takes. This patch represents one of the Marine Corps' most versatile and combat-ready infantry battalions, carrying the 4th Marines' legendary "China Marines" legacy into every modern deployment.

1st Battalion, 4th Marines is based at Camp Pendleton as part of the 1st Marine Division. The battalion inherits the 4th Marines' storied lineage — from Shanghai service in the 1920s-30s, through the fall of Corregidor, to reconstitution from Raider battalions in WWII. In the modern era, 1/4 has deployed regularly to the Western Pacific under the Unit Deployment Program, maintaining the forward presence that defines the Marine Corps' Pacific mission. The battalion has also deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, conducting operations that range from conventional warfare to security cooperation with partner nations. "Whatever It Takes" isn't just a motto — it's the operational philosophy that drives everything 1/4 does.
