1st Battalion, 3rd Marines — the "Lava Dogs" — carry the fighting spirit of the Pacific in their DNA. Based in Hawaii and deployed throughout the Indo-Pacific, this battalion has been at the forward edge of Marine Corps operations in the Pacific theater for decades.
1/3 serves as part of the 3rd Marine Regiment and has been based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay. The battalion's nickname, "Lava Dogs," reflects their Hawaiian home and the volcanic terrain they've trained on for decades. In WWII, the 3rd Marines fought at Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. In the modern era, 1/3 has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, including attachment to the 7th Marine Regiment during Operation Phantom Fury at Fallujah. The battalion brings a unique Pacific perspective to Marine Corps operations, trained for the maritime and island environments that define future conflict in the Indo-Pacific.
