This patch honors the naval infantry tradition of the Israel Defense Forces — a force that has conducted daring raids, covert operations, and amphibious assaults from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and beyond.
Israel's naval commando tradition dates to the founding of the state in 1948, when the Palyam (sea companies) of the Palmach conducted clandestine immigration operations and naval raids during the War of Independence. Shayetet 13, Israel's premier naval commando unit, was established in 1949 and has since become one of the most respected special operations forces in the world, comparable to the U.S. Navy SEALs or British SBS. The Israeli Navy also maintains naval infantry and coastal defense units trained for amphibious operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Israeli naval forces have participated in numerous operations including the 1973 Yom Kippur War, counter-terrorism missions, and maritime interdiction operations.
