Delta Company 4th Combat Engineer Battalion Flag Patch
Delta Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve
Delta Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion (4th CEB), is stationed in Knoxville, Tennessee, and serves as a vital component of the United States Marine Corps Reserve's engineering capability. The 4th Combat Engineer Battalion itself traces its distinguished lineage to 25 August 1943, when it was activated at Camp Pendleton, California as Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Marines, 4th Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force—deploying to the Pacific Theater in February 1944 to fight in some of World War II's most ferocious battles.
The battalion's combat engineers fought at Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and the legendary Battle of Iwo Jima, where engineers cleared obstacles, demolished fortifications, and built critical infrastructure under withering enemy fire. After deactivation in November 1945, the battalion was reactivated on 1 November 1951 at Baltimore, Maryland, and redesignated as the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion on 1 June 1976. Today, the 4th CEB comprises companies dispersed across five states: H&S Company and Engineer Support Company in Baltimore, Alpha Company in Charleston, Bravo Company in Roanoke, Charlie Company in Lynchburg, Delta Company in Knoxville, and Echo Company in Bessemer.
The battalion was called to active duty in December 1990 for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and again in January 2003 when personnel deployed in support of the initial invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, with subsequent deployments through 2008. Eight members of the battalion made the ultimate sacrifice during operations in Iraq. The battalion's mission—enhancing the mobility, counter-mobility, and survivability of the Marine division through close combat engineer support—remains as critical today as it was on the beaches of the Pacific in 1944.
Perfect For: Delta Company members and veterans, 4th CEB personnel, 4th Marine Division reservists, Knoxville-area Marines, Marine combat engineer community members, and supporters of the Marine Corps Reserve.
A proud tribute to the reserve combat engineers of Knoxville, Tennessee, carrying forward a legacy forged on the beaches of Iwo Jima and tested in the deserts of Iraq.
