The Grumman EA-6B Prowler was the backbone of Marine tactical electronic warfare from the 1970s through 2019, when the last Marine Prowler squadron, VMAQ-2 "Death Jesters," was deactivated, ending the Marine Corps' electronic warfare aircraft mission. Marine Prowler squadrons — VMAQ-1 "Banshees," VMAQ-2 "Death Jesters," VMAQ-3 "Moon Dogs," and VMAQ-4 "Seahawks" — deployed extensively in support of every major military operation, from Operation Desert Storm through Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The four-seat Prowler carried a crew of one pilot and three Electronic Countermeasures Officers (ECMOs) who operated the ALQ-99 tactical jamming system, suppressing enemy air defenses and providing electronic protection for strike aircraft.
