Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 (HMLA-167) — "Warriors" — 50th Anniversary (1968–2018)

This challenge coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of HMLA-167 "Warriors," one of the most combat-tested light attack helicopter squadrons in the Marine Corps. Marine Light Helicopter Squadron 167 (HML-167) was commissioned on 15 March 1968 at Marble Mountain Air Facility, Republic of Vietnam — one of the few Marine Corps squadrons born directly in a combat zone. From its commissioning through June 1971, HML-167 conducted operations against communist forces, recording over 60,000 flight hours and dropping the first helicopter bomb in Marine aviation history. Two of the squadron's aircraft were the last Marine helicopters to leave Vietnam.

Relocating to MCAS New River, North Carolina, the Warriors evolved through decades of operational excellence. In the 1980s, after more than 20 years operating the UH-1, the squadron added the AH-1T Sea Cobra and became HML/A-167. On 28 February 1995, the Warriors became the first East Coast HMLA to receive an AH-1W Super Cobra with the Night Targeting System. The squadron marked the first time Marine ground and helicopter assets were embarked aboard an aircraft carrier during Balkans operations aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, HMLA-167 deployed 18 AH-1Ws and 9 UH-1Ns to Al Asad, Iraq, supporting operations including Operation Vigilant Resolve in Fallujah in April 2004.

Today, HMLA-167 operates the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom under Marine Aircraft Group 29 (MAG-29), 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, at MCAS New River.

Perfect For: HMLA-167 Warriors past and present, 50th anniversary collectors, MAG-29 Marines, 2nd MAW personnel, MCAS New River aviators, and Marine Corps rotary-wing history enthusiasts.

Fifty years of warrior spirit — from the fires of Marble Mountain to the deserts of Al Anbar, HMLA-167 defines combat helicopter aviation excellence.
