U.S. Coast Guard Sticker

United States Coast Guard

The United States Coast Guard traces its origins to 4 August 1790, when Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton established the Revenue Marine, a fleet of ten cutters tasked with enforcing tariff laws along the nation's coastline. On 28 January 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the United States Life-Saving Service to form the modern Coast Guard. The service was further strengthened on 1 July 1939 with the absorption of the United States Lighthouse Service and on 28 February 1942 with the transfer of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation.

Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has served in every major American conflict. During World War II, Coast Guard crews manned over 800 cutters, 351 Navy vessels, and 288 Army vessels, while operating 802 Coast Guard-crewed landing craft during the D-Day invasion at Normandy on 6 June 1944. During the Vietnam War, Coast Guard Squadron One deployed 26 patrol boats and over 200 personnel for Operation Market Time, interdicting enemy supply routes along 1,200 miles of coastline. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Coast Guard rescued more than 33,500 people in the largest search and rescue operation in the service's history.

Today, the Coast Guard operates under the Department of Homeland Security with over 44,000 active-duty members and approximately 7,000 reservists. Its motto, "Semper Paratus" — Always Ready — reflects a commitment spanning more than 230 years of maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection, and national defense operations across the globe.

Perfect For: Coast Guard active-duty personnel, Coast Guard veterans, maritime law enforcement professionals, search and rescue specialists, and supporters of America's oldest continuous seagoing service.

A tribute to the men and women who stand Semper Paratus — protecting America's coastlines, waterways, and maritime interests since 1790.
