The 117th Intelligence Squadron, part of the Alabama Air National Guard's 117th Air Refueling Wing at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base in Birmingham, is one of the Air Force's premier intelligence units. With a history dating back to 1922, the unit's intelligence legacy includes exploiting film from the Berlin Airlift air corridors, analyzing Vietnam-era reconnaissance footage searching for downed aircrew, and providing direct support to combatant commanders across Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Inherent Resolve, and beyond. In 2024, the 117th IS was recognized as the best Joint Reserve Intelligence Center within the Defense Intelligence Agency. With approximately 160 airmen delivering over 22,000 man-days of intelligence support, they are the quiet professionals who turn raw data into actionable intelligence.
