VMM-162 traces its lineage to 30 June 1951, when it was commissioned at Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana as one of the earliest Marine helicopter transport squadrons. The unit made amphibious warfare history in February 1952 during Operation Lex Baker I, executing the first large-scale ship-to-shore helicopter assault ever attempted. Across the following decades the Golden Eagles flew CH-46 Sea Knights through Vietnam, Lebanon, Liberia, Somalia, and Iraq before transitioning to the MV-22B Osprey and reactivating as VMM-162 on 31 August 2006 at MCAS New River, North Carolina. Today the squadron operates under Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, providing medium-lift vertical envelopment and expeditionary assault support for the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The REIN designation marks the squadron in its reinforced configuration as the aviation combat element of a Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked aboard amphibious assault ships and forward-deployed across U.S. Central Command and European Command areas of responsibility. That deployed identity gives this officially licensed PVC patch a specific operational context that separates it from a standard squadron piece, making it a precise marker for crews, maintainers, and veterans who served during MEU rotations with the 24th or 26th MEU.
