**Officially Licensed USMC MATSG-23 Patch — Marine Aviation Training Support Group Embroidered Patch**

MATSG-23 — the direct descendant of MAG-23, whose squadrons formed the legendary Cactus Air Force on Guadalcanal. From the jungles of the South Pacific to the classrooms of NAS Pensacola, the legacy endures.

Marine Aviation Training Support Group 23 (MATSG-23) traces its lineage to Marine Aircraft Group 23 (MAG-23), commissioned on 1 March 1942 at MCAS Ewa, Hawaii. MAG-23 became the first Marine aviation group to engage the Japanese in the South Pacific, landing VMF-223 and VMSB-231 at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal on 20 August 1942 — forming the nucleus of the legendary Cactus Air Force that helped turn the tide of the Pacific war. MATSG-23 was formally activated on 15 January 1982 at NAS Lemoore, California, to support F/A-18 Hornet training, and was redesignated in 2000 to honor its storied MAG-23 heritage. Today, based at NAS Pensacola, Florida, MATSG-23 serves as the functional training advocate for all USMC Aviation Logistics entry-level training, responsible for training thousands of Marines per year in the disciplines that keep the Aviation Combat Element mission-ready.
