**Officially Licensed Marine Barracks 8th & I Patches — USMC Ceremonial Unit Embroidered Patch**
Marine Barracks 8th & I — the oldest post in the Marine Corps, where President Thomas Jefferson himself picked the site, and where the British supposedly refused to burn the barracks out of respect for the Marines' fighting spirit at Bladensburg. If the Corps has a spiritual home, this is it.
Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., located at the corner of 8th and I Streets SE, was established in 1801 when President Thomas Jefferson and Second Commandant Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows rode on horseback through the new capital to find a suitable location within marching distance of both the Navy Yard and the Capitol. The Commandant's House, completed in 1806, is the oldest public building in continuous use in Washington, D.C. — and has been the official residence of every Marine Commandant since. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, 8th & I is home to some of the Corps' most prestigious units: the Silent Drill Platoon, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps ("The Commandant's Own"), the U.S. Marine Band ("The President's Own" — where John Philip Sousa served as director from 1880 to 1892), the official Marine Corps Color Guard, and the Marine Corps Body Bearers. Barracks Marines conduct ceremonial missions throughout the National Capital Region and provide security at designated locations including Camp David.
