USS Forrestal (CV-59) was the first supercarrier, commissioned in 1955, and the lead ship of a class that fundamentally changed naval aviation. This embroidered patch captures CV-59's identity in full detail. Forrestal introduced the angled flight deck, steam catapults, and enclosed hurricane bow that became standard for all subsequent American carriers. She served through Vietnam and the Cold War, and is forever linked to the devastating 1967 flight deck fire that killed 134 sailors. That tragedy transformed Navy damage control training and made every carrier safer. Forrestal's design legacy lives on in every American carrier built since.
