This embroidered patch represents the expeditionary firefighting and rescue element of Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 (MWSS-272). MWSS-272 provides the aviation ground support that allows Marine aviation to operate from expeditionary airfields, and the firefighting and rescue element is critical to that mission. These Marines provide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) capability at forward operating bases and expeditionary airfields where no civilian fire department exists. When Marine aircraft operate from a dirt strip in the middle of nowhere, MWSS-272's firefighters are the only crash rescue available.
