Marine Wing Support Squadron 174 (MWSS-174) is an aviation ground support unit of the United States Marine Corps, providing the essential services that keep Marine aircraft flying — including aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), commonly known as crash fire rescue (CFR). Based under Marine Aircraft Group 24 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, MWSS-174 provides airfield operations, crash fire rescue, fuels, heavy equipment, motor transport, utilities, weather services, and expeditionary engineering support to Marine aviation units. The crash fire rescue section is one of the most demanding and specialized billets in Marine wing support, manned by Marines trained to respond to aircraft emergencies, crashes, and fires on the flight line and runway with specialized ARFF vehicles, fire suppression agents, and rescue equipment. These Marines train to extract aircrew from burning or damaged aircraft under the most extreme conditions — a mission that requires split-second decision-making, physical fitness, and the technical expertise to operate in environments involving jet fuel, ordnance, and composite materials. This PVC patch commemorates a MWSS-174 crash fire rescue detachment deployed to Australia as part of Marine Expeditionary Force — Darwin (MEF-D), the annual rotational deployment of U.S. Marines to the Northern Territory of Australia for training and exercises with the Australian Defence Force. The MEF-D deployment places Marine aviation and ground support units in the Indo-Pacific theater, building interoperability with Australian forces and demonstrating the Marine Corps' ability to operate from expeditionary locations across the region.
