Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49 (MALS-49), the "Magicians," is a 4th Marine Aircraft Wing logistics squadron with a detachment at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. MALS-49 provides aviation maintenance, supply, and logistics support to the Reserve squadrons of Marine Aircraft Group 49 (MAG-49), ensuring that Reserve aircraft remain mission-capable and combat-ready. The squadron's motto, "Gratis Non Est Sufficere" — roughly "It's Not Enough to Merely Suffice" — reflects their commitment to excellence beyond the minimum standard.
The McGuire detachment supports MAG-49's operations from the joint base in New Jersey, providing intermediate-level maintenance, supply chain management, ordnance support, and technical expertise to the Reserve squadrons operating from the installation. MALS-49's Marines are the unsung heroes of Reserve Marine aviation — the maintainers, logisticians, and supply specialists who ensure that when Reserve pilots show up to fly, their aircraft are ready.
