This TH-57 "Last of the Sea Rangers" leather patch commemorates the instructor pilots who flew the final flights of the TH-57 Sea Ranger helicopter before it was retired from the Navy's training fleet. The transition from the TH-57 to the TH-73A Thrasher marked the end of an era in naval helicopter training, and this leather patch honors the IPs who were there for the final chapter.
The Bell TH-57 Sea Ranger served as the Navy's primary and intermediate helicopter trainer for over four decades, training tens of thousands of naval aviators at NAS Whiting Field, Florida. Generations of helicopter pilots earned their wings in the TH-57, learning the fundamentals of rotary-wing flight that would carry them through careers in combat, search and rescue, logistics, and special operations. The "Last of the Sea Rangers" were the instructor pilots who flew the final training flights, conducted the last check rides, and then watched as the beloved helicopter was retired from service. This leather patch — crafted in the same style as the original WWII flight jacket patches — is a fitting tribute to the end of the TH-57 era.
