US Navy VR-51 Windjammers Leather Squadron Patch — Leather Patch
Windjammers — VR-51's Global Reach from Paradise
Operating from one of the most beautiful bases in the military — Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay — the Windjammers of VR-51 project logistics support across the entire Pacific and beyond. This leather squadron patch captures the heritage of a reserve squadron that punches far above its weight class.
Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 51 (VR-51), known as the Windjammers, is a Navy Reserve transport squadron stationed at MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. The squadron flies the C-40A Clipper — a military variant of the Boeing 737-700C — providing worldwide logistics support for the Department of Defense. Originally commissioned on 1 November 1970 at NAS Alameda, California, VR-51 flew Douglas C-118B Liftmasters before transitioning through the C-9B Skytrain and Gulfstream C-20G. Re-established at Kaneohe Bay in 1997, VR-51 has supported missions across the Pacific, Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America — moving thousands of Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, and cargo around the globe while providing transportation for vital State Department missions and Congressional delegations. The "Windjammers" name reflects both their Hawaiian home and their worldwide range of operations.
