Official HT-28 Hellions 4th of July / America 250th Anniversary Squadron Patch and Name Tag — Helicopter Training Squadron 28 Embroidered Patch Set
Hellions celebrate 250 years of American independence — where the next generation of rotary-wing aviators earns their wings.
Helicopter Training Squadron 28 (HT-28), the "Hellions," is one of three advanced helicopter training squadrons based at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, Florida. Established on May 25, 2007, HT-28 falls under the command of Training Air Wing Five and flies the TH-73A Thrasher helicopter trainer. The Hellions' mission is to teach, coach, and mentor military officers from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and allied nations, producing capable and resilient Naval Aviators who earn the coveted Wings of Gold upon graduation.
The squadron's name — "Hellions" — is a clever play on the word "helicopter," with its connotation of an unruly child serving as a nod to the student pilots being refined into military aviators through the program. HT-28's distinctive patch features a black Chinese dragon coiled around a lighted torch on a tri-color field of deep blue, olive green, and red — representing the Navy's oceanic operations, the Marine Corps' power projection ashore, and both services' heritage of valor. The dragon motif traces back to VMF-218, the only other unit to carry the Hellions name, a Marine Fighter squadron that saw action in the Pacific during World War II. This special edition patch set celebrates America's 250th anniversary in a patriotic 4th of July colorway.
Perfect For: HT-28 Hellions instructors and student aviators, NAS Whiting Field personnel, Training Air Wing Five members, TH-73A Thrasher crew, Navy and Marine Corps rotary-wing aviation enthusiasts, 4th of July and America 250 patch collectors, and anyone who's earned their wings at Whiting Field.
