VR-55 Minutemen Sticker
Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55 (VR-55), U.S. Navy Reserve
Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55 (VR-55), the "World Famous Minutemen," was established on 1 April 1976 at Naval Air Station Alameda, California, during the United States Bicentennial celebration—earning its patriotic nickname from the timing of its commissioning. Captain Richard Hendel took command of three C-9B Skytrain aircraft and 220 personnel, and the Minutemen became the Navy's first reserve jet logistics squadron, operating the Navy's pioneering "pathfinder" program utilizing superior navigational capabilities.
In its first partial year of operations, VR-55 recorded 3,030.7 flight hours, transporting 55,507 passengers and 2.8 million pounds of cargo. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the Minutemen mobilized within four days to support Operation Desert Storm, deploying to Sembach Air Base, Germany, and conducting around-the-clock logistics missions to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece—achieving a 100% mission completion rate while moving 4,327 troops and 2,729,665 pounds of cargo. In January 1991, the squadron set a VR community record for the most monthly hours flown at 794 hours.
After transitioning from the C-9B to the C-130T Hercules in December 1993, VR-55 relocated from Moffett Federal Airfield to NAS Point Mugu, California in December 1998. The squadron has since supported Operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle, and Iraqi Freedom from bases in Sigonella, Atsugi, and Bahrain, while also participating in humanitarian operations including Hurricane Katrina relief, Typhoon Melor response, and Operations Unified Response (Haiti) and Tomodachi (Japan). As of FY2018, VR-55 had accumulated over 177,177 accident-free flight hours.
Perfect For: VR-55 Minutemen members and veterans, Navy Reserve aviators and aircrew, Fleet Logistics Support Wing personnel, C-130 Hercules community members, NAS Point Mugu sailors, and supporters of Navy Reserve logistics aviation.
