Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 51 (VR-51) — "Windjammers"

Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 51 (VR-51), known as the Windjammers, is a United States Navy Reserve transport squadron commissioned on 1 November 1970 as a Naval Reserve Force Squadron at Naval Air Station Alameda, California. Originally designated Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 51, the squadron initially flew Douglas C-118B Liftmaster aircraft with detachments at NAS Alameda and NAS Glenview, Illinois, providing fleet logistics support across the Pacific and beyond.

The squadron underwent several transitions throughout its history, consolidating at NAS Glenview in 1983 upon transitioning to the C-9B Skytrain. Following the Base Realignment and Closure process, VR-51 was disestablished on 30 September 1994 with the closure of NAS Glenview but was recommissioned in June 1997 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, equipped with the Gulfstream C-20G executive transport. The squadron flies approximately 3,000 flight hours per year, providing worldwide Department of Defense logistics support with missions spanning from Wake Island to South America, Europe, India, Australia, Singapore, Africa, and the Middle East.

In May 2019, VR-51 received its first Boeing C-40A Clipper — a military variant of the Boeing 737-700C — with a second aircraft arriving in July 2019, replacing the C-20G fleet. Today, the Windjammers operate two C-40A aircraft with approximately 97 personnel, a mix of active duty and Selected Reserve sailors, under the Fleet Logistics Support Wing at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The nickname "Windjammers" references the large merchant sailing ships known for long-distance ocean voyages — a fitting metaphor for the squadron's global logistics reach.

Perfect For: VR-51 active duty and reserve personnel, Fleet Logistics Support Wing members, C-40A Clipper aircrew, Kaneohe Bay station personnel, Navy Reserve aviators, and naval logistics professionals.

A tribute to the Windjammers of VR-51 — delivering worldwide logistics support from the heart of the Pacific since 1970.
