Patrol Squadron 4 (VP-4), the "Skinny Dragons," is a United States Navy maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadron flying the Boeing P-8A Poseidon from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. Originally established as Bombing Squadron 144 (VB-144) on July 1, 1943, the squadron has served continuously through World War II, the Cold War, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. The "Skinny Dragons" nickname was born in 1965 when waitresses at the Officers' Club remarked that the squadron's Hawaiian-inspired Black Griffin logo looked more like a "Skinny Dragon" — and the name stuck. VP-4 has earned multiple Battle "E" Awards, CNO Aviation Safety Awards, and the Captain Arnold Jay Isbell Trophy for anti-submarine warfare excellence. During Desert Storm, the Skinny Dragons flew 279 combat missions in the Arabian Gulf, contributing to the total destruction of the Iraqi Navy.
