Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111), the Sundowners, is one of the most storied fighter squadrons in U.S. Navy history. The Sundowners' combat record spans World War II through Vietnam, flying the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat, F9F Panther, F9F Cougar, FJ-3 Fury, F-8 Crusader, and ultimately the F-14 Tomcat. The squadron earned its name by claiming to shoot down enemy aircraft "before sundown," and their shark-mouth F-14 Tomcats became some of the most iconic images in naval aviation history. VF-111's legacy encompasses decades of air-to-air combat excellence.
