Commander Naval Air Force Reserve Patch
Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve (CNAFR), United States Navy
Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve (CNAFR) is the naval aviation component of the United States Navy Reserve, headquartered at Naval Air Station North Island, California. CNAFR exercises control over three aircraft wings, the Navy Air Logistics Office, and Naval Air Facility Washington, maintaining the Naval Air Force Reserve in a constant state of readiness to meet Fleet Response Plan requirements. The organization retains control over unique and irreplaceable assets, including the U.S. Navy's entire intra-theater airlift capability within Fleet Logistics Support Wing and all Navy adversary training units subordinate to the Tactical Support Wing.
CNAFR's subordinate squadrons perform some of the most critical and specialized missions in naval aviation. Reserve squadrons conduct adversary training—providing realistic threat replication for fleet fighter squadrons—fleet essential airlift, special operations support, anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, and mine countermeasures. The Fleet Logistics Support Wing, based at NAS Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Texas, operates the C-40A Clipper and C-130T Hercules aircraft that provide the Navy's dedicated logistics airlift worldwide. Squadron Augment Units across the country provide seasoned instructor pilots and flight officers to training and fleet replacement squadrons.
Within the broader Naval Aviation Enterprise, CNAFR operates alongside Commander, Naval Air Forces, the Chief of Naval Air Training, and the Commander, Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center. Together, these organizations oversee approximately 3,800 sea-based and shore-based aircraft conducting the full spectrum of naval aviation missions from strike warfare to maritime patrol to humanitarian operations. CNAFR's reserve aviators and maintenance professionals bring decades of combined fleet experience, providing the depth and expertise that allow the Navy to surge aviation capability when the nation calls.
