Officially Licensed HSL-47 Saberhawks Squadron Patch — Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 47 Saberhawks Embroidered Patch
Saberhawks — HSL-47's anti-submarine warfare legacy.
Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 47 (HSL-47) "Saberhawks" was a United States Navy helicopter squadron that operated from surface combatants as part of Carrier Strike Group 5 (CSG-5) and Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5), deploying aboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) and other ships from NAF Atsugi, Japan.
HSL-47's Saberhawks conducted anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) missions from the flight decks of cruisers, destroyers, and frigates, extending the surface combatant's sensor and weapons reach far beyond the ship's horizon. The Saberhawks flew the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, using its dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and torpedoes to hunt submarines while also providing surface surveillance and over-the-horizon targeting for the ship's missile systems. HSL-47 was later redesignated as HSM-77 Saberhawks when the Navy consolidated its light airborne multi-purpose system (LAMPS) helicopter squadrons. The Saberhawks' forward-deployed posture in Japan made them one of the most operationally active helicopter squadrons in the Navy.
This patch preserves HSL-47's anti-submarine legacy.
Perfect For: HSL-47/HSM-77 Saberhawks veterans, SH-60B Seahawk crews, anti-submarine warfare helicopter pilots, and legacy squadron patch collectors.
