Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 31 (VX-31), the "Dust Devils," is based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California, and conducts operational test and evaluation of weapons systems, tactics, and aircraft for the Navy. The MH-60S SAR patch represents VX-31's search and rescue detachment, which maintains alert status to respond to emergencies during flight test operations in the vast desert ranges surrounding China Lake. Flight testing pushes aircraft and crews to the edge of the envelope, and having a dedicated SAR capability ensures that when something goes wrong, help is minutes away.
