Official VP-1 Screaming Eagles 2023 DET Patch — Hunting Subs Since '43
From U-boats in the Atlantic to submarines in the Pacific — VP-1 finds what doesn't want to be found.
Patrol Squadron ONE (VP-1) "Screaming Eagles" is one of Naval Aviation's oldest and most storied patrol squadrons, currently flying the Boeing P-8A Poseidon out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. Established as Bombing Squadron 128 on February 15, 1943, the squadron immediately went to work hunting German U-boats off the East Coast and Iceland, recording its first confirmed kill — sinking U-279 — in October 1943. The squadron then transferred to the Pacific, sinking Japanese midget submarines in the Philippines. VP-1 made history by completing a full-squadron around-the-world flight, proving the Navy could rapidly deploy patrol assets anywhere on the globe. The squadron flew eight combat deployments in Vietnam, served during the Iranian Hostage Crisis out of Diego Garcia, and supported Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2019, VP-1 transitioned from the venerable P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon, embarking on its first Poseidon deployment in 2020. This 2023 DET patch marks another chapter in an 80-year legacy of finding the enemy below the waves.
Perfect For: VP-1 Screaming Eagles aircrew and maintainers, P-8 Poseidon community members, P-3 Orion veterans, NAS Whidbey Island personnel, maritime patrol aviators, and anyone who hunts submarines for a living.
