Official VMU-3 Phantoms Hawaii Reaper Shoulder Patch — Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 3 Embroidered Patch
The Phantoms haunt the Pacific skies—VMU-3, the Marine Corps' forward-deployed unmanned aerial vehicle squadron, operating the MQ-9A Reaper from the shores of Hawaii across the vast Indo-Pacific theater.
Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 3 (VMU-3), the "Phantoms," is the United States Marine Corps' newest unmanned aerial vehicle squadron, activated on 18 September 2020 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, and assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. VMU-3 operates the General Atomics MQ-9A Reaper—a remotely piloted aircraft system that provides persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as precision strike capability in support of Marine Air-Ground Task Force operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
The MQ-9A Reaper is powered by a Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprop engine producing 900 shaft horsepower, giving the aircraft an endurance of over 27 hours and a service ceiling above 50,000 feet. The Reaper carries a Multi-Spectral Targeting System (MTS-B) sensor ball with electro-optical, infrared, and laser designator capabilities, and can be armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs, and GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions. This combination of extraordinary endurance, advanced sensors, and precision weapons makes the MQ-9A an unblinking eye over the battlefield with the ability to strike targets of opportunity.
VMU-3's strategic positioning at MCB Hawaii places the Phantoms at the heart of the Marine Corps' focus on the Indo-Pacific theater under Force Design 2030—the Commandant's vision for restructuring the Marine Corps to meet the challenges of great power competition in the Pacific. The squadron provides III MEF and joint force commanders with persistent surveillance and strike capabilities that can cover vast oceanic distances, supporting the Marine Corps' concept of Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) and Stand-In Forces operating within contested maritime environments.
Perfect For: VMU-3 Phantoms members and veterans, Marine Corps UAS operators and sensor operators, MAG-24 personnel, 1st MAW and III MEF service members, MCB Hawaii Marines, MQ-9A Reaper enthusiasts, and Indo-Pacific defense strategy followers.
The Phantoms of VMU-3—unseen, unblinking, and armed—providing the eyes and striking power of the Marine Corps across the vast Pacific from the shores of Hawaii.
