This VMM-266 (Reinforced) "Griffins" ACE 25.1 Africa patch commemorates the squadron's deployment as the Aviation Combat Element of Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force – Africa (SPMAGTF-AF) during rotation 25.1. VMM-266 REIN served as the air component providing tiltrotor assault support across the African continent.
VMM-266 operates the MV-22B Osprey from MCAS New River, North Carolina, as part of MAG-26 under 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The "Reinforced" designation means the squadron deploys with additional aircraft and personnel from other units — typically AH-1Z Vipers, UH-1Y Venoms, and CH-53E Super Stallions — creating a complete aviation combat element capable of independent operations. SPMAGTF-Africa conducts theater security cooperation, crisis response, and partnership-building missions across the African continent, responding to embassy reinforcement requirements, humanitarian crises, and security threats. As ACE 25.1, the Griffins provided the rapid-response aviation capability that enables Marines to reach any location on the continent within hours.
