VMM-162 Golden Eagles Patch
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162 (VMM-162) — "Golden Eagles" — Night Operations Design
The Golden Eagles of VMM-162 were activated on 30 June 1951 as Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 162 (HMR-162) at Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana, California, during the Korean War era. The squadron quickly established itself as a pioneer in Marine helicopter operations, and in 1957 six of its Marines were awarded the Philippine Legion of Honor for gallant conduct during recovery operations following the crash that killed Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay on Cebu Island.
The Golden Eagles built an extraordinary combat record across decades of deployments. In 1958, the squadron participated in the Lebanon crisis, executing ship-to-shore helicopter assault operations. During the Vietnam War, HMM-162 deployed multiple times between 1963 and 1965, operating from Da Nang and Nha Trang. In 1983, the squadron deployed to Beirut, Lebanon aboard USS Iwo Jima as part of the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, providing critical support during the aftermath of the devastating barracks bombing. During Operation Sharp Edge in Liberia, the Golden Eagles evacuated 226 American citizens and 2,400 third-country nationals. The squadron also served in Operations Provide Comfort, Restore Hope in Somalia, Deny Flight in Bosnia, and Iraqi Freedom. Standing down in December 2005, VMM-162 was reactivated on 31 August 2006 as the second operational MV-22 Osprey squadron in the Marine Corps. In April 2008, the Golden Eagles deployed to Iraq, and following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, their Ospreys — operating from USS Nassau — became the first ever used for a humanitarian mission. Today, VMM-162 operates under MAG-26, 2nd MAW, at MCAS New River, North Carolina.
Perfect For: VMM-162 Golden Eagles veterans and active duty members, MV-22 Osprey crew and maintainers, MAG-26 and 2nd MAW personnel, Beirut veterans, Operation Sharp Edge participants, and Marine tiltrotor aviation enthusiasts.
This night operations patch honors a squadron that has been at the forefront of Marine aviation innovation — from pioneering helicopter assault tactics to leading the Osprey revolution.
