Official VMM-162 Golden Eagles 26th MEU TAIL Flash Patch — First in Everything Since 1951
The Golden Eagles don't just fly missions — they make amphibious history.
VMM-162 traces its lineage to June 30, 1951, when HMR-162 was commissioned at Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana. In February 1952, the squadron's helicopters made amphibious warfare history during Operation Lex Baker I — the first ship-to-shore movement of a combat-equipped company by helicopter ever attempted on that scale. The Golden Eagles went on to provide critical support during the aftermath of the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, evacuated 226 American citizens and 2,400 nationals from war-torn Liberia during Operation Sharp Edge, and deployed to Somalia, Bosnia, and Iraq. After transitioning to the MV-22 Osprey in 2006 as the second operational Osprey squadron in the Marine Corps, VMM-162 deployed to Iraq in 2008 — even transporting then-presidential candidate Barack Obama — and responded to the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake with the first-ever Osprey humanitarian mission. This 26th MEU tail flash represents one of the Corps' most storied tiltrotor squadrons.
Perfect For: VMM-162 and HMM-162 Marines, 26th MEU veterans, Osprey and Phrog aircrew, and anyone who's proud of a squadron that's been first at everything.
The Golden Eagles — making history at every landing zone.
