Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 (VMM-161), the "Greyhawks," is the world's first helicopter transport squadron, commissioned on 15 January 1951, and now operating the MV-22B Osprey from MCAS Miramar under MAG-16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. This PVC patch represents VMM-161 (Reinforced) serving as the Aviation Combat Element for Crisis Response–Africa Force (CR-AF) rotation 25.2—a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force dedicated to crisis response operations across the African continent.
SPMAGTF-CR-AF is one of the Marine Corps' regionally-focused crisis response forces, designed to provide a rapidly deployable capability in Africa for embassy reinforcement, non-combatant evacuation operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and other contingency missions. The force operates across the vast African theater, with personnel and assets positioned to respond to crises in partnership with U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). VMM-161 (REIN) as the ACE brings the Osprey's transformative speed and range to the African operating environment, where distances between potential crisis areas can span thousands of miles.
The Greyhawks' motto, "Equitatus Caeli"—Cavalry From the Sky—takes on special meaning in Africa, where the MV-22's ability to self-deploy over extended ranges and operate from austere, unimproved landing zones provides the crisis response force with a reach and flexibility that legacy helicopters could never match. The "25.2" designation indicates the second rotation of 2025, continuing the Marine Corps' persistent presence on the African continent.
